There’s video out of the first press conference since Rick Scott chose Jennifer Carroll as his running mate in the Florida Governor’s race today.
We’ve seen this video before. It’s the now familiar pattern of a GOP candidate who is clueless about the office they’re running for, and to try and cover that up, they repeat prepared talking points like robots, hoping you won’t notice. They have no answers for questions, so they don’t answer and change the subject. I suppose it beats saying “I got nothin’!” but that’s obvious.
Scott isn’t big on answering questions, answers, or debates, and there are good reasons.
There’s a lot that’s odd here, beyond just the fact that Scott seems to think Florida is up for sale, he and Carroll just formed a merger, and the state is their next acquisition. (Or hostile takeover.)
Among the proposals from their “presentation:
Scott wants to “treat education like a business,” says “parents and students are our customers. But they should be able to choose the schools they want to go to.” He says we should “team our universities up with the private sector.” (Private schools, like privatized health care maybe, and you know, that other Medicare fraud thing no one asked about? Because that worked out so well.)
There’s the Arizona type immigration “show me your papers” law they want, but we would NEVER allow racial profiling! No, not us! statements.
Scott says sure, he’ll debate the issues. (Alex Sink vs. Scott’s mother again maybe?)
On picking Carroll, Scott is asked if he’s “pandering by choosing a black woman as a running mate?” (Of course not, no pandering here! It’s just that their backgrounds are so similar. As in….?) They’re both outsiders. (Uh…not really, no.) Will it help to have a black woman on the ticket? Carroll: “We’ll find out Nov. 2!”
Then he’s asked if he and Carroll knew each other before he made his choice. Scott’s response:
“We met months ago. We met back in……I think it was April, at a Republican women’s event. I read a lot about Jennifer before that.” (He THINKS they met back in April. But then John McCain is still the record holder in the “least number of hours you’ve known your running mate department.”)
And then oddly, near the end of the video, there’s this comment:
“She’s an outsider ….No one will ever say they can’t control her.”
