There’s a good column today by Howard Troxler in the St. Petersburg Times that you might want to take a look at.
It’s a good illustration of the sneaky and deceptive politics playing out in the Florida Legislature on Amendment 7 which will have an impact on our voting districts. It will basically cancel out Amendments 5 and 6 which would make elections fair and competitive. Something the Republican majority in Florida certainly don’t want.
Amendment 7 is a piece of work. It is an attempt to trick the voters of Florida …
… into wiping out Amendments 5 and 6, the previous two measures on the ballot —even if they pass.
Amendments 5 and 6 would require “fair districts” for politicians, not drawn to favor any party or incumbent. They were put on the ballot by citizen petition.
The Legislature does not like this idea, so it tacked on Amendment 7, even jiggling the order to make sure that it became “Amendment 7.”
Amendment 7 says that it will be the part of the Constitution that is supreme, “without subordination to any other provision.”
Including Amendments 5 and 6.
You wanted fair elections and you got Amendments on the ballot that will make that possible. Yay!
Unfortunately, Republicans could lose their majority if that happens. Boo! They can’t let THAT happen, so POOF! Amendment 7! You’re welcome! After all, it’s NOT about You, it’s all about THEM! Sorry. You lose!
In short, the Republican controlled Legislature in Florida won’t even allow you to have a fair election ON a fair election! (Read the entire article here.)
