The Good News:
This morning the Florida House passed a bill adding the homeless to the state’s hate crime law.
The Bad News:
The vote was 80-28. All 28 “no” votes came from Republicans.
One of the 28 voting against the measure was Rep. Paige Kreegel, R-Punta Gorda. He’s a doctor, and among the committees he serves on is the Health And Family Services Policy Council. So you might be wondering “why would a Rep. such as Dr. Kreegel vote against including the homeless in hate crimes laws? Well, for Kreegel, the answer is a simple one:
In voting against the law, Kreegel justified his opposition by stating the following:
“The bill is creating a new protected class of people based on the fact that they’re not voters, they’re not taxpayers and they live on the streets,” he said.
Oh well, when you put it that way…….it’s still pathetic.
“Yeah I beat that guy pretty badly, but hey, he’s homeless and a bum who doesn’t vote so who cares?” How’s that for reasoning?
