(Correction- The Tea Party (TPA) was actually formed in August, not “yesterday” (11-10-09) as I wrote below. It just surfaced in the news yesterday. My mistake.)
Yesterday was truly a historical day in Florida. The state formed a brand new political party. Woo hoo? Get out your party hats and noisemakers as we welcome the:
Tea Party (TPA) ?
OK, so the hat would have to be one of those cute little numbers we saw all over the place this past summer. You know, the ones with the tea bags hanging off the sides and dangling in peoples faces?
I wouldn’t really bother with the noisemakers though, because this new “Republican Implosion Party” joins 31 other “minor” political parties in Florida, along with the big two. The party also appears to be more like the “TPINO” party.
No, that doesn’t mean “TP”-INO- GOT ANY so you can stop snickering. Although with these Tea Baggers, I suppose anything is possible. There were at least two of them “mooning” everyone at the Capitol last week during the protests, so it’s not much of a stretch.
In this case, I say “TPINO” in referring to “Tea Party In Name Only.” I say this because, if you check out the Florida Division of Elections webpage and click on “Tea Party”, you will see that, much like the Republican Party they are abandoning, there’s not much “there” there. When you look at their “purpose”, this is what you will see:
See? Nothing. Just like the GOP! Well, except for the funny hats.
In all fairness though, not many of the parties listed along with them have any “purpose” listed either. But a few of them do have really purposeful names, like:
Surfers Party of America, Family Values Party, Possibility Party, Real Food Party of the United States of America, Objectivist Party, Ecology Party of Florida, and the Green Party of Florida.
Then there are the British Reformed Sectarian Party, Florida Socialist Workers Party, Party for Socialism and Liberation Party, and the Socialist Party of Florida. There are Whigs, Reformers, Moderates, Libertarians and at least by my count, four different Independence and Independent Parties. In short we’ve got a little something for everybody.
So, in honor of the new “Party Without a Purpose” (other than splitting the GOP further of course) I say……………cheers?
